As described by Beachbum Berry in his text, this is his version of the classic Rum Barrel cocktail with elements from versions served at Don the Beachcomber, the Mai-Kai, and Steve Crane's Luau. It's designed for shaking with ice cubes rather than flash blending, so it's also a bit more travel-friendly.
